China has etched its name into the annals of neurotechnology by becoming the first nation to grant commercial authorization for a brain chip designed to treat a physical disability. The implant, known as NEO and developed by Neuracle Medical Technology, decodes the motor intentions of patients living with paralysis, converting those neural signals into coordinated movements of an assistive robotic hand.

Following 18 months of rigorous safety validation, China's National Medical Products Administration granted market authorization for the device, targeting individuals aged 19 to 60 who have sustained paralysis resulting from cervical or spinal cord injuries that severely impair limb function.

According to Nature, the skull-embedded implant is roughly the diameter of a coin—a compact form factor that belies its sophisticated architecture. Eight electrodes extend from the chip and interface directly with the motor cortex, the brain region responsible for orchestrating voluntary movement. When a user imagines moving their hand, the device captures the resulting neural activity and transmits it to an external computing system, which interprets the signal and commands a prosthetic device to execute the intended motion.

In practice, NEO enables thought-driven control of a motorized glove capable of completing a range of fundamental daily tasks—grasping objects, manipulating eating utensils, and handling personal hygiene items. Sources cited by the publication report that 32 individuals have already used the device during testing, with no adverse side effects documented throughout the evaluation period.

While numerous companies are actively developing brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and neural implant platforms, none have previously secured authorization to bring such technologies to market as approved therapeutic devices. Even high-profile ventures like Neuralink have encountered device-related complications that have slowed progress toward any formal commercial clearance.

The Plan to Dominate the Brain Implant Industry

This landmark approval arrives just months after China released a sweeping policy framework outlining the country's ambitions to establish a globally competitive BCI sector within a five-year horizon. The strategy details 17 concrete steps spanning research, development, and large-scale application of neural interface technologies across multiple domains.

"The Chinese government has always supported disruptive technologies. I think from the government's point of view, this policy means that BCI technology has already moved from the concept level to the product level," Phoenix Peng, cofounder of NeuroXess and Gestala, both BCI companies, told WIRED earlier this year.

The policy framework also places significant emphasis on scaling the production of non-invasive, wearable neurotechnology across a variety of form factors—including forehead-mounted, head-mounted, and ear-mounted configurations such as hearing aids, visors, and smart glasses. Beyond consumer applications, the plan envisions deploying these devices in demanding industrial environments, including hazardous materials handling, nuclear energy facilities, mining operations, and electrical infrastructure management.

For the present, implantable brain interfaces remain firmly focused on a singular, consequential objective: restoring meaningful independence to individuals living with severe disabilities. Experimental systems already in development allow patients to communicate through thought alone, operate computers without any physical movement, and—in some early-stage cases—begin to recover elements of sensory perception, including vision. With the commercial clearance of NEO, the global neural interface industry has unmistakably crossed a threshold into a new era.
