The mid-sized SUV thoroughly impressed automotive critics with segment-leading range, a refined infotainment experience, and an exceptionally composed driving character, collectively driving upwards of 50,000 reservation holders to commit sight-unseen.
Yet for a significant portion of BMW's devoted following, the brand's identity is inseparable from its performance sedans. That makes the BMW i3 — the first "Neue Klasse" electric sedan — every bit as strategically consequential for the Bavarian automaker as its SUV counterpart.
(It bears clarifying that this BMW i3 is the all-electric expression of the BMW 3 Series lineage, and carries no direct lineage from the original BMW i3 — the compact urban runabout that BMW discontinued several years ago.)
On first impressions, the BMW i3 delivers on its promise. Unveiled in a single configuration for the time being, the BMW i3 50 xDrive pairs dual electric motors for a combined output of 469 hp. Underpinning the powertrain is BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology, with the proprietary Heart of Joy computing system orchestrating real-time driving dynamics — a combination BMW signals will yield both spirited performance and refined composure, though specific figures have yet to be disclosed.
The BMW i3's most headline-worthy capability, however, is its range. Rated at up to 440 miles under EPA standards and up to 900 kilometers under Europe's WLTP testing cycle, it positions itself ahead of every current Tesla offering on that metric. Equally noteworthy is the charging infrastructure: the 800-volt electrical architecture supports up to 400 kW of peak charging power, enabling the addition of approximately 400 kilometers of range in as little as 10 minutes — a figure that meaningfully narrows the gap between electric and conventional refueling in real-world scenarios.
Dimensionally, the BMW i3 measures 187.4 inches in length and 73.4 inches in width — placing it squarely in the same footprint as the combustion-engined BMW 3 Series, and notably close to Tesla's Model 3, which stands as its most direct electric competitor. Aesthetically, though, the i3 plants its flag firmly in "Neue Klasse" territory, marking a deliberate stylistic break from BMW's current internal combustion lineup while simultaneously paying homage to the brand's iconic Neue Klasse models of the 1960s.
In practical terms, this means BMW's once-dominant oversized kidney grille is effectively absent — rendered as a near-seamless continuation of two assertive, darkened horizontal elements that integrate the headlight clusters. At the rear, BMW exercises notable restraint, stopping just short of collapsing the taillights into the kind of unbroken horizontal light bar that has become something of an industry cliché.
Step inside and the cabin shares considerable DNA with the iX3. The centerpiece is a 17.9-inch central touchscreen display, complemented by a full-width Panoramic Vision display running along the base of the windshield and an optional 3D head-up display for those seeking an additional layer of augmented driving information. The steering wheel defaults to an architecturally bold four-spoke design that underscores the car's technology-forward identity, with an optional M Sport two-spoke wheel available for drivers who prefer a more performance-oriented aesthetic.
Production of the BMW i3 is scheduled to commence this August, with customer deliveries anticipated to begin in the autumn. Pricing details have not yet been announced; for context, the BMW iX3 carries a starting price of approximately $60,000 in the U.S. market.
